Make sure you have the latest code

A year has passed since Windows XP has Shipped and Microsoft has posted a lot of bug fixes and security updates to its site. Service Pack 1 contains all of the updates before SP 1 shipped and is available for download from Microsoft's update site.  You can get to the update site by clicking the start menu and choosing Windows Update from the start menu.

You can also buy an SP 1 CD for $9.95.  If you recently purchased a computer with Windows XP or bought a copy of the OS in a retail store, you may already have SP 1.

Service Pack 1 doesn't add much in the way of features--a key reason for the updates was to let PC manufacturers disable Microsoft applications such as Internet Explorer and Windows Messenger--but we do recommend installing it to make sure you have all the fixes.

XP Desktop Appearance

If you have just got a new computer or had one reloaded, you might notice that your desktop icons are missing.  The default desktop for Windows XP does not have My Computer, My Documents, Network Places, or Internet Explorer Icons on it.

To add or remove these icons, follow these steps.  Right-click on any empty space on the desktop; choose properties, the Desktop tab, and then the Customize Desktop tab.  You will notice that there are four checkboxes that you can check or uncheck to add or remove these icons from the desktop.  You can also change the look of the icons from this window.

Make XP Look Like Windows 98

If you are a Windows 98 user and are just switching to Windows XP, there are a few things that you can do to make the transition easier.  By making a few small changes you can make XP take on the appearance of Windows 98.

The first thing that you can do is change the appearance of the start menu to help you find your way around easier.  Right-click on the taskbar, choose properties, and then go to the start menu tab.  You can then choose start menu, which is the XP default setting, to the classic start menu, which is the Windows 98 look.

Another thing you can do is to change the theme.  This will not help with any functionality, other to help you feel more comfortable.  Right-click on any empty space on the desktop, choose properties, and you will see the theme box.  You can change the way the desktop appears by picking from the dropdown menu, choosing the appropriate theme, and selecting the OK button.

Software Compatibility

If you try to install an older program in Windows XP, you are sometimes told that it is not compatible.  Windows XP contains a program to try to make older programs compatible.

Open Windows Explorer, select your CD ROM drive, and then the folder that contains the program's setup file ( with a .exe file extension ).  Right-click the setup file, choose properties, and then click the compatibility tab.  Check Run this program in compatibility mode for, and select one of the Windows versions ( 95, 98/ME, NT, or 2000 ) in the drop down list.  Now install the program.  If you run into any problems, follow the same steps for the file that runs the program.
